This reminded me of the bearings on my bicycle. But here's what I found interesting. The bearings on bicycles are also "sealed." But that doesn't mean grease (water! 😱) can't get by the seals, especially if you direct a pretty aggressive stream of water on the bearings from a hose!! So I'm thinking grease will penetrate the bearings on your mower using the zerk fitting only despite the bearing seals. This is especially plausible when you consider how blazing hot the inside of the shaft gets. That heat will make the grease more "runny" allowing it to more easily penetrate the seals and get into the bearings. I think the key is to regularly add grease through the zerk fitting and never point high pressure water on the bearings if you're cleaning the understudy of the mower carriage.

Thanks, Dennis! I have a question: if the old belt came off and I have a new belt, is the old belt too stretched to reuse? We were wondering what made it come off, and I failed to put it back on due to tension. The video showed me how I can loosen the tension by setting the brake. My plan was to reinstall the original belt and save the new one. My guess is that you will recommend changing it. Can you reply? Great video and thanks for making it!

I was in this situation, and my deck isn't that big, so I elected to replace all of the boards instead of chasing individual boards over the years, and it looks better too. I had never done it before, but it came out well. In fact, I took steps that I know a pro wouldn't have, like pre-drilling every single screw. There are no splits. I also treated the butt ends with stain before screwing it down - it rots there first.

The short side of the support beam only has 1 stud and it’s right in the middle. I am unsure if I should do 2 anchors (1 on each side of the stud) or if maybe I just need only one. If you are sure the steering wheel is in the correct rotational position, you can take up much of the play with some hot melt glue in the gap. That stuff sticks to anything clean and dry pretty well. I strengthened the wheel covers on my 2000 Ford Expedition with some. I washed them and went around the entire inside with a bead of it. They are made in 2 pieces which can eventually come apart. If that happens, you are out $50 for each one, if Ford still has any available, which I doubt. Hot melt works quite well on anything which doesn't get hot. You can warm the parts if you have big pieces to assemble. That will give you time to get them in position before the stuff cools too much. Of course, the parts must be perfectly clean and dry for it to work. If you need to take stuff apart, just warm the parts with a heat gun until the glue softens.

If I may add, the sealed bearing is known as 2RS (2rubber seals) in its designation. Now the material in the new bearing is known as slushing compound. It is a combination of lubricant and anti-oxidizing agents. The amount installed at the bearings assembly is exact. The danger of grease is not under but over greasing. The oil carrier will dam in the elements and cause them to skid not roll. I am retired from SKF Bearing machine reliability division and we have a saying, "Grease gun or deadly weapon". To determine the proper amount of lubricant follow this simple formulae: SKF formula as follows. Multiply the bearing's outside diameter in inches by its width in inches, or height for thrust bearings. Then, add 0.114 to the product to get the amount of grease in ounces. This formula is widely accepted as an industry standard.
